Jack Morris Goudey SP

Hello Jack Morris! In a Tigers uniform no less.

Jack Morris is a borderline Hall of Famer in my book. I could go either way. If he got in, I wouldn't be upset. If he was left on the outside looking in I could see why people felt that way too.

I don't use wins as a way to measure how great a pitcher was, but he did win at least 14 games over the course of 13 of 14 seasons culminating with his 21 win season in 1992 with the Blue Jays. That season is one reason you can't take wins seriously. 4.04 ERA. Those 21 wins were a product of an explosive Jays offense.

Morris did have approximately 8 seasons of dominant pitching. Do you need to be a pitcher who strikes out a batter per inning to be dominant and get into the Hall of Fame? In the roto world we live in now, it almost seems like you have to for quite some time. Morris averaged only 5.83 strikeouts per nine innings over his career, and had a WHIP of nearly 1.30. I believe these are the things keeping him out of the Hall.

In the end, I'm glad to add Jack to my Goudey collection. I'm still searching for more short prints from last year, and if you have any laying around, please let me know, I'd love to take them off your hands one way or another. My needs list is in the right sidebar.

David Price Goudey RC Auto

David Price is off to a good start with the Rays this year, although he's still walking a few batters each game. You'd hope at some point he'd nail down that command and become an elite pitcher, but it may still take a season or so. Very respectable 3.20 ERA and averaging nearly a K per inning. His worst start thus far came against the White Sox, who have a very pathetic lineup.

I was excited to see the Price autograph on my favorite set to collect from last year. That reminds me, I should get back to work on those short prints. Guess I'll head over to ebay and see what I can see.

Let's Talk Baseball & Cards & HBL Week 3

Let's talk about everything and anything. It feels like a month since i last posted. Oh wait, it has been? Totally makes sense. Apparently these little baseball fans in training, newborn children, take up quite a bit of your time. Who'd have thunk that? My little guy's name is Theodore William.

I assure you we didn't name him after Teddy Higuera and Will Clark, two of my favorite players from the 80s. Nor did we name him after Ted Williams, but many of my baseball friends are already calling him Teddy Ballgame. Too funny. Theodore was a name we both liked and William is a family name, but no one has to know if I secretly appreciate his name for the baseball roots, right?

The nice part about my three weeks off from work is that I was able to get some scans in and recall some long lost trades I did.

My friend Brian and I also ran a team 50K race, so the Hoffman Rookie Card may or may not have changed hands, I'll have to do an update on that as well. What I can tell you is that we busted a box of 1998 Leaf Updates in search of the Crusade cards. If you've never seen these fantastic cards, take a look. I'm going to do a long post on that box break this week as well.

So back to where I started, the image that kicked off this post, the Jim Palmer Sports Royalty Goudey Graph. I actually purchased this card sometime back in January or February. I took such a liking to what most people decided was a horrible set - I knew my first Palmer auto should be from it. I'm very happy to have added it to my collection. I also spent some time bidding and losing out on a couple different Jim Palmer rookie cards from the 1966 Topps set. I'll likely make another run at one. Since I know there are many Palmer collectors out there, do any of you have one? Did you use ebay to snag it? Just curious.

Speaking of Jim Palmer, I could really use him on my fantasy team this week. First a quick recap of the first two weeks of my season.

Berkman got hurt, I got mad. Signed Aubrey Huff and Luke Scott. Guess which is still on my team? As a flier I also picked up Gaby Sanchez last week. Everything I've read says he should be a middle of the order bat for the Marlins down the road. I'd like that very much. He's hit 8th much of the season, but I've got the patience to wait on him. I like him.

I've also had to scramble at the outfield position. While I still like Jay Bruce, I can't let him do to me this year what BJ Upton did to me last year. I continually started Upton all year despite his lack of usefulness outside of stolen bases. I always thought to myself "this is the month he gets the power back". It never happened. While Bruce has 2 steals, he also only has 1 run scored and 2 RBI in two weeks. That's killing me. So I made the hot waiver pickup, Jeff Francouer. Other than the 20 inning extravaganza that was played last night he's been on fire. Taking walks even! I can't believe it. But I'll try to ride his hot streak this week.

Another guy on my 'list' is Raul Ibanez. I traded for him in the off-season full well knowing I despised the guy because I didn't understand where he came from and why he was good. He played in Philly and hit behind Howard and Utley so I was willing to give it a go. Well the Phillies decided to hit him 6th this year which makes him mostly useless to me. He was rendered completely useless by not hitting, ever. At all. Luckily I was able to trade Justin Frasor right before he lost his closer job for Magglio Ordonez.

The other trouble spot for me so far has been starting pitching. Verlander and Peavy had terrible first weeks, and while each had 2 starts this week, and both pitched better, I still didn't get a win out of either pitching. In fact, I don't think I have a win this week. Brett Anderson and Ian Kennedy also both had 2 starts and neither won their first game on Tuesday. Both also pitch today. Realistically I'm just looking for Kennedy not to get BLOWD UP, and Anderson to pitch well. Here's to hoping.

And to round out my first (long) post back in a while, I'll give you the tough calls I made this week in fantasy baseball.

I like the Marlins going on the road to Houston and Colorado. Houston might be the worst team in the NL. I've been saying that since before the season. Because of this, I'm going to give Gaby Sanchez a start at 1b instead of Aubrey Huff, and I'm going to play Dan Uggla (red hot) over Rickie Weeks (also red hot) just because I don't necessarily need the steals from Rickie right now. I can still cheer for him all week.

My last tough call is whether or not to promote Jeff Niemann this week to pitch against Boston and Toronto. Boston's lineup scares me, and no one has been able to stop Vernon (back on the roids) Wells. Seriously, does anyone else think that Wells was sick of being a punchline and just decided to do whatever he had to do to stop getting picked on? I do. Anyway, I can't decide if I want to use Niemann, double down on Ian Kennedy for a second week, or use Dave Bush on the road against the Pirates and at home against the Cubs. Leaning toward Bush. Bush is normally great at home and poor on the road, but it's the Pirates on the road. Bush would join Peavy, Verlander, Anderson, Beuhrle, Marmol, and Heath Bell for Week 3.

As for the rest of my hitters, catcher is set with AJ (ice cold) Pierzynski. Third base, shortstop and DH are set all season with Longoria, Derek Jeter, and Troy Tulowitzki - also known as the heart of my team. And Carl Crawford takes the other outfield spot next to Maggs and Frenchy.

This post got super long, but I'm glad to be back, I might have enough in me to do 2 posts a day for a while, so long as I can find the time.

One last note since I talked with a few of you other bloggers about MLB The Show. I spent three weeks playing this game, bought the PS3 just to play it, and I love it. I honed in on a set of sliders that make it realistic and fun for me, and now that I have I'm starting a Brewers dynasty. Let's see how much I get to play now that I'm back at work.

Trade Completed with Nachos Grande

Golden Valley, Minn - Trade rumors have swirled around these two storied franchises for weeks and today we're getting our first look at how this deal shook out.

Skipper Chris over at Nachos Grande agreed to send a pile (READ: 50) of my 2009 Topps Series 2 needs and some Goudey 4-in-1s in exchange for a pile of A&G Minis, some 2009 Heritage High Number SPs, and whatever else I can find.

Nachos Grande was reached for comment on this stunning trade:

"Well, I had these Series 2 Topps laying around, and I'll be damned if Sharpe didn't have a need for them. The next thing you know I'm pocketing some precious high number SPs and a sack full of minis. I couldn't be happier. Sure beats using the 'bay. I can only hope these cards actually arrive. This Sharpe character is a bit of an enigma, plus I think he's shorting me a card, we'll see if this bounty ever shows up."

I threw in Nelson Cruz because I think that might be my new favorite card, which would surpass the crazy Nick Swisher card from earlier in Series 2 Topps. And Brett Anderson, well I'm just going for karma posting him. He's supposed to carry the back end of my fantasy baseball rotation this year. Behind the likes of Jake Peavy, Justin Verlander, Mark Buehrle, and Jon Sanchez. Please Brett, don't endure the classic sophomore slump. I implore you! IMPLORE YOU!

Back In The Fold

Ryan Braun comes across as cocky, but since he's on my team I don't care.

I just love Brauny, I really do. I hope he and Prince settle down in Milwaukee for a Yount and Molitor-esque stretch. That would make my decade.

I picked up Braun's Goudey Heads Up card off eBay along with ManRam. The lot cost me $0.99 total. I dig these cards. I think it's the sketches and the random information on the front of the card like I like so much. On some of the older cards you get these cartoons and such on the back of the card, but never really on the front. This gives each card a nice whimsical feel that I can really get behind.

Little dude swinging a hammer on Braun's card? Sweet. Love it.

A side note on the "Drafted 5th overall" note. At the time I remember being upset that we didn't take Troy Tulowitzki. I think I'm over it now. All I can say is that I'm glad we steered clear of the pitching in that first round. Wade Townsend, Mike Pelfrey, Lance Broadway. Eek. Garza and Volstad may be the only decent arms out of that first round. There is however still a bit of unfulfilled talent from the top of that draft class. Justin Upton, Ryan Zimmerman, and Troy Tulowitzki have all emerged but Alex Gordon hasn't gotten on track yet (I'm betting on him this year), and Jeff Clement hasn't done what he was supposed to do yet. Maybin, McCutchen, and Jay Bruce were high schoolers at the time and are still making their way toward being solid MLB players.

For the record, Manny's card is cool just because it features all that pine tar.

I'm glad to add these to the collection and I'm still looking for about half the cards from the 2009 Goudey SP set. If you've got any Heads Up or Sports Royalty for trade, just let me know - my goal is to get a trade bait post up this week.

"An exchange of one thing for another"

Yeah, that's what I thought, this wasn't really a trade. More of a CTBNL type of transaction. Unless of course I sent something and just can't remember.

However, I do want to thank Paul from Carl Crawford Cards for sending over a Phil Hughes Goudey that I can now trade to my card collecting buddy Brian. Probably for another Sports Royalty or Short Print I'm looking for in the Goudey set.



Paul was also kind enough to send along 3 other Crawford cards he had duplicates of. I should explain a little, I'm thinking about adding Crawford to the player binder I've started which now includes Mike Mussina, Jim Palmer, Rickie Weeks, Alex Gordon, Will Clark, Jake Peavy, and Joe Mauer.

Crawford helped my fantasy baseball teams to a couple of titles throughout the 2000s. I have a soft spot for him, and I may have to go re-acquire him for this season.

Puttin Out An ABP On 3 Goudey Base Cards

Much like many of you answered the call when I put together Operation Fig Tree to complete my own Goudey base set, I need some more of you to answer this call. I'm doing my friend Brian a favor and asking if anyone out there has an extra Phil Hughes, Cristian Guzman, or Shairon Martis 2009 Goudey base card laying around out there.

Now, don't everyone rush at once to trade off your prized Guzman and Martis cards. I want an orderly line at the front door of the blog. And to be truthful I could stand to trade for 2 copies of each of these cards.

I've got a bunch of Topps U&H cards from this year listed within my trade area that someone may be interested in. Also up for grabs are any of the T206s I've either posted or will post in the coming days. Otherwise we can go the PTBNL route.

Your help and attention to this matter are greatly appreciated.

If I Do Nothing Else Today . . . Trade With Democratic Roadkill

It's going to be posting my trade with Duane from Democratic Roadkill.

I sent Duane 9 A&G Code Cards from my failed attempt at the code this summer. Silly me, I thought I'd need the actual cards to pull it off, so I started pulling together some of the cards that were deemed important. Well my folly is Duane's gain. In addition to those code cards I sent over a pair of Goudey base cards to help him complete his set, a pair of A&G back 09 minis, and a pair of regular back A&G 09 minis. One of which was The Mick, who I still needed for my mini set, but I was happy to oblige Duane being that he pulled together some much needed Goudeys for me.

Here was the haul. To start, we've got 3 Goudey Heads Up cards that I needed for my set, plus 6 4-in-1s. I really do enjoy the Heads Up cards. I think the design is neat with the various stats or nicknames plastered all over the front of the card. I'm also digging the Yount and Fielder (and Schmidt and Howard) card. All Fielder needs to do is win an MVP this year and we can call that an MVP card.

And finally, for some reason, Duane had the Bill Hall Goudey Graph. Very recently I had a $1 bid rejected on eBay and I felt sad about that. I shall feel sad NO MORE. I've not got the Gallardo, Hall, and Gamel Goudey Graphs. Still yet unaccounted for are JJ Hardy and Prince Fielder. If you see either of these Goudey Graphs, please let me know.




Also, I'd be willing to take on, via trade, any Goudey Graphs you just don't want to hold onto. Even Wade LeBlanc ;)

Mat Gamel Goudey Graph

In my quest to add a pile of Goudey Graphs from this year's, I once again dipped my toes into eBay. What I walked away with is what you see here, Mr. Mat Gamel. I think he's got a nice signature and put it in a stellar spot on the card, unlike Gallardo who penned his name in blue against the dark blue Brewers jersey.

Mat had a tough rookie campaign, but I still fully expect him to fill 75% of Prince's shoes once the Brewers deal Fielder for some pitching (a man can dream). Gamel may have looked okay at the hot corner but his destiny lies at first base.

I still lament losing out on the Fielder Goudey Graph earlier this fall since I've yet to see another resurface. If anyone out there has it, and wouldn't mind parting with it, please let me know. Same goes for the Bill Hall Goudey Graph and JJ Hardy Goudey Memorabilia card.

Yo! (C) (tm) (R) Plus the namesake

There are many things to love about Yovanni Gallardo, affectionately known as Yo among us fans of the Crew. At some point in the not so distant past, I started referring to him as "Yo!" and proceeded to say he should copyright/trademark that. Hence the post title.

Well, I picked this Goudey Graph up off eBay a couple weeks back and I'm just getting around to posting it. I picked this up for $8 as a Buy It Now. At the same time my $1 offer for Bill Hall and JJ Hardy Goudey Graphs were both turned down. Considering the value of those two cards is probably about $0.10 each based on the number of collectors of this set in general and those players in particular, I can only scoff that my offers weren't accepted. Sure, it was probably only $1 in profit, but I can't imagine the people holding these cards really want to keep them. Pride got in the way of a buck. Never make that mistake!

Well, I'm excited to extend my 2009 Goudey Graph collection to three now: Gallardo, Marson, and Byrd.

Now, I made reference to the namesake in the title as well. I ask you football card collectors, what the heck do I have here? And let's not focus why it's in a screw-down because I HAVE NO CLUE!

Looks like a 1995 Topps Fan Favorite (FF8), but I'm not certain why I believed it was so valuable back in the day. Any insight would be appreciated.

2009 Goudey Starter Set Or For Trade

I'm finally getting around to getting my list of available cards up on my site.

I started last yesterday with the Allen & Ginter minis I'm looking for or can trade. I've also got standard sized A&G base cards up for trade as well.

Today I'm posting the list of 2009 Goudey's I have up for trade. Base, minis, and 4-in-1s. I am willing to trade all the base cards as a starter set if there is someone that is interested in putting together the base set. Otherwise, consider these singles all up for trade. I Dipped Into Ebay, Not Sure How I Feel

Okay, so here's the deal. I've added two Goudey Graphs from this year's set to my collection.

But I had to go to eBay to do it. I really didn't want to, but I also really wanted to add these cards to my collection.

So . . . the backstory. If you've read any of my posts over the summer and into the fall, you'll know that I did a good bit of training for some 10K races this summer with Brian. He and I were breaking packs and blasters of Goudey for reward for finishing various achievements throughout the season. After we were three blasters into our Goudey season, Brian started to lament how we should have just laid of some cash for a hobby box, thus garaunteeing ourselves a Goudey Graph and some memorabilia cards. My reaction to this was:

"Brian, do you really want to lay out $80 to land a Marlon Byrd autograph?"

Thus the Marlon Byrd phenomenon was born. Anytime we talked about getting a bad hit from a box, we'd always say "you're just going to pull a Marlon Byrd anyway". Even when he broke a box of Philadelphia Football Brian dubbed his Quentin Jammer auto a Marlon Byrd.

I knew at this point I'd have to grab the Goudey Graph of Marlon at some point since it was such a key part our conversations around collecting this summer. This card is priceless to me.

Next up is the backstory on Lou Marson, who has since been dealt to the Indians (I believe in the Cliff Lee deal). As we were breaking these blasters of Goudey this summer, the doubles and triples started to pile up. For whatever reason Brian started to end up with a whole stack of Lou Marson cards, and I had approximately six Greg Golson's. In all honesty, stories like these are why I collect cards. All summer we joked about trying to get a TTM autograph from each of these players for one another. As of now, neither of us has taken the time to do it, so I figured I'd do the next best thing and pick up a Lou Marson Goudey Graph for my partner in crime.

In case you are wondering, I picked up each of these for $2 in a "Best Offer" auction. There was also the one that got away, a Prince Fielder Goudey Graph. Prince went for $16.50 which was just over what I was willing to pay. If there is someone else out there with a 2009 Prince Goudey Graph, I'd be interested in that. Or a Greg Golson Goudey Graph. I think they made one of those as well.

Goudey Short Prints (Clap Clap, Clap Clap Clap)

In no time at all, my playoff baseball fever will begin to set in. I hate the years (READ: almost all of them) when the Brewers are nowhere near a playoff race, but while my baseball watching goes dormant in August and September it does eventually come back to life for October. And I've even latched onto the Twins fleeting hopes of a playoff birth. But annnnnnnnnnnnyway, that's not why I'm posting this morning/afternoon.

I'm back to solicit the world for more help finding the various short prints I need from 201-300 in the 2009 Goudey set. I really only have a handful.

I've gotten a few of these in trade from the good people out there, and I'd like to trade for more. I'll update my need list for the Heads-up and Sports Royalty cards sometime tonight or tomorrow, but in the meantime feel free to point me to your trade lists or leave a comment with what you know you have for trade.

Today Was A Good Day

Oh boy, it's Carlos Gonzalez Goudey day.

I stumbled across an outstanding card collector over at Shot Not Taken named Raymond.

He had just busted open some A&G cards and was very excited to find a framed relic of Ichiro. It was a jersey relic, and I had the matching bat relic to pair up with it. So I offered it up in a trade.

And just as karma would have it, he happened to have bought "only a handful" of Goudey packs this year, but without those few cards happened to have Carlos Gonzalez. After a bit of negotiating (really just more like "I dig your A&G minis"), he agreed to send over a few of his black bordered minis with Carlos to complete the trade.

Little did I know that he'd send over all the minis he had. And due to an outstanding evening I once had in Seattle approximately a year ago that oddly enough, involved a unicorn, I was stoked to pick up the A&G Unicorn Creates of Legend, Myth, and Terror. If only I could have landed that relic. I'd give anything for that relic!

Well I won't spoil the surprise for Raymond, but I did include another card in my trade for him after finding out a little more about what he collects. I'll let him show it off on his site once it safely arrives in New York (and sorry for the delay over the holiday weekend).

I was also happy to find out that not just one person, but two people had the Bob Gibson and Kevin Slowey cards I needed to fill out my base Goudey set. Mr. Collective Troll - I apologize but you were beaten to the punch by my good friend Alex, my friend's 5 year old son, who oddly enough tucked them away in a binder earlier this summer, only to lose the binder somewhere in his room, only to have his dad happen across said binder. Alex then offered up the final cards I needed for my set in exchange for a Joe Mauer relic I received earlier this season from Ryan at Card Cache.

I don't think Alex could be more excited to get the Mauer jersey card. He'd been telling me all summer how bad he wanted it and I told him if he could finish my Goudey set, I'd do it. And I'm a man of my word. Little did I know what fate had in store for me, however . . . (to be continued in my next post)

2009 Goudey: The Obsession Continues

So yes, I'm more than mildly obsessed with this set. I've got an idea for a longer post that's floating around in my head to try to explain it, but for now, I've got an agenda.

Thanks to one Goudey blaster and one fantastic blogger I was able to nab both the Bill Hall and Ben Sheets Brewer relics. Let's forget that neither of them actually play for the Crew anymore.

What I'd like to do is lay my hands upon the other Goudey Memorabilia and Goudey Graphs from this year's set. And yes, I realize we're talking about guys like Prince Fielder, Robin Yount, and Paul Molitor but I'm sure there's also someone out there dying to deal off their JJ Hardy Memorabilia card, right?

I'd really like to know if anyone out there is holding any of these memorabilia or autographed cards. Whether it's working out a trade offer or brokering a sale, let me know if you've got one of these and we can hammer out a deal.

Sure, I could buy them on eBay, I'm sure, but I really like getting to know the other people out there collecting, and this is the best way to do it, in my opinion.

Belated Mail Day - Part 1

Wow, I totally went off the radar last week. But I'm back, with a much overdue Mail Bag type post. I'm very much behind on posting what's come in the mail. Specifically, I owe Beardy an entire post about the A&G minis I received in trade from him a few weeks back (I know, I know, I'm a horrible person).

I also recieved a Bill Hall jersey swatch from a nice guy named Brian. I don't think he's got a blog out there, but if I'm wrong, Brian please correct me and I'll link you up. The Bill Hall package came on the day the Brewers designated him for assignment, and I'll likely remember that for a long time. I actually used the Hall card in trade for two Goudey cards I needed for the 2009 base set with my friend Brian. I'll have to post about that as well. I guess my to-do list is growing ever longer.

This post, however, is to document what my good friend Mike, over at JD's Wild Cardz sent over last week. These were in trade for a handful of 2009 Topps Heritage cards he needed for his Heritage Project (can you help?)

First is a mini from the 2007 Goudey set. This was a surprise in the package, and I was very happy to see Mr. Verlander, who is one of my favorite players and the ace of my fantasy team.



He also included a mini of Glen Perkins rookie card from that set. There was also a Matt Kemp 2009 Goudey mini included.

The next "card" is a fantastic addition to my collection. My very own Ginter Code advertisement complete with Mike's autograph. I'll just need Nick to autograph it for me as well when I send out his trade packaged this week. What's terrific about this is that I sent over the Ginter Ad cards to protect the other cards in hopes that Mike would take that as a sign . . . to sign. And he did. Thanks Mike - great signature too.



He also sent over a Joe Nathan 2009 Goudey base card for my friend Brian along with the Vlad base card and Brooks Robinson short print I needed. It looks like Operation Fig Tree is starting to bear fruit. Yup, I'll end it on that terrible pun.

Updated Goudey Need/Want List

I've now updated my Goudey needs list.

Please take a look here if you think you can help me finish my Goudey base card set. I'm also interested in finishing off the first set of short prints from 201-240.

I'd be happy to trade any of the Allen & Ginter cards I have and I can list those out.

I'll continue with the Gint-A-Cuffs box reveal tomorrow morning.

Calling All Goudey Retail Packs

Anyone seen any of these laying around Target? Is Target the only retail store that's selling them?

I've noticed they seem to be drying up around here, and there are blasters left, but I can't rationalize dropping $20 at once, even if I will spend that entire $20 at some point over the course of the month. Silly, really, isn't it?

I've just got an itch to see if I can hit another SP, but can't seem to find a pack.

The Spoils!

It was well worth the week long wait to have a very special package show up on my doorstep this afternoon.

A while back when I first posted the list of cards I needed to complete the 2009 Goudey base set, a nice guy named Ryan over at Card Cache informed me he had a good majority of the cards I needed available in trade. Eager to make my first trade I replied to the message he left in my comments here.

Ryan did one better than trade with me, and sent me all the 2009 Goudey cards I needed for my set with a couple of special surprises.

The first, pictured in the lower right is a Ben Sheets Goudey Memorabilia card. The second pictured in the upper right is a green mini Heads Up Ryan Braun card. Also included amongst the cards I needed for my set were other Brewers cards from the base set along with about 14 4-in-1 cards, including 3 blue and a green.

Easily my favorite, which you can see in the lower left of the picture, was a card featuring Jim Palmer, Bob Gibson, Gaylord Perry and Nolan Ryan. Little did Ryan know I spent a good portion of the 80s and early 90s collecting Jim Palmer cards, and when I save my collection from the depths of my parents basement sometime this summer, I'll take a look and see where I left off.

I intend to pay this favor forward by not only keeping my eyes peeled for some of Ryan's favorite players which I hope to learn about through his writing at Card Cache, but also by sending an Albert Pujols mini over to Marie at A Cardboard Problem as soon as I can.

Ryan, you'll be happy to know I also passed along about 30 cards from my pile of extras to my friend Brian who is sharing in my obsession with me this summer. We had a draft for the 4-in-1s tonight and it was fantastic and I can't thank you enough.

Goudey 2009 Need/Want List

It looks like I still need to post the contents of the third and final blaster from last week, which included a numbered black parallel, but for now I want to post the list of cards I need to facilitate some trading.
